My Fantasy Horror Project Now Has a Title!

Hi all,

For July 2025 I'm writing a YA Fantasy Horror standalone book. It's been in my ideas folder for years and it's finally it's time to shine. It took a while for me to come up with a title for it, as I usually like my books to have some sort of title before starting them. But this one I struggled with for quite a bit, nothing that I came up with seemed to fit. But now I have a title that I'm finally happy with...

The Severed Pantheon.

As this book is about goddesses, I wanted some sort of homage to them. And severed was the perfect word that I could think of to describe their rule. They are not liked by the masses for the way they treat their blessed and they don't even like each other.

But then Imara comes along, and their fate changes.

I won't say anything else to save you from spoilers, but I hope you like the new title as much as I do!

I'm still going to try my best to name my books before writing them in the future. Even if the title doesn't end up sticking, I prefer having something there instead of 'Unnamed WIP'.

That's it for this week, I hope you like the title! See you next Sunday.

Pride Month - Main Character Edition

Hi all,

A few years ago I made a blog post about LGBTQ+ dragons in the Elemental Dragons series. This time, I'm going to list the main characters that I've written about that are LGBTQ+! I know I did a post previously on character sexualities, but some have changed since I've written their books. So here is an updated list.

To make things less confusing, I'm just going to list the main characters for books that I've already written or will write within the next year or so. I have quite a few books in my ideas folder but the characters aren't fully developed yet. Maybe I'll update this post in a few year's time with any new main characters I come up with!

Audra (Mute) - Asexual.

Cheyenne (Years) - Bisexual.

Shannon (Celestial Plague) - Lesbian.

Ashleigh (Celestial Plague) - Asexual Aromantic.

Raya (Celestial Plague) - Bisexual.

Jenna (Celestial Plague) - Lesbian.

Bastet (Curse of Anubis) - Lesbian.

Hailey (Street Rats) - Bisexual.

Reema (Game of Air and Lightning) - Demisexual.

Ataraxia (Empty Skies) - Asexual Aromantic.

Laelaps (Empty Skies) - Gay.

Francesca (Original Elementals) - Lesbian.

Su-hyeon (Original Elementals) - Gay.

Benjamin (Original Elementals) - Pansexual.

Lucia (Original Elementals) - Bisexual Demisexual.

Tiegan (Original Elementals) - Genderqueer Aromantic.

Stella (Original Elementals) - Closeted Lesbian Asexual.

Phew! Until I typed this all up, I never realised how many of my characters are part of the LGBTQ+ community. As the years have gone and I've written more, a lot more of characters are part of this community. I want representation for those in the community in a diverse range of characters, not just one or two side characters per book. In most of the books, their sexuality is never at the forefront of their story. It will just be a slight footnote or a love interest as a minor plot point.

I'm not going to stop writing LGBTQ+ main characters, nor am I going to stop writing straight ones. It depends on the character and their story. With some of the characters I go where they take me, rather than giving them a label before writing.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

A Collection of LGBTQ+ Resources

Hi all,

This is the second blog post that I'm writing for Pride Month! I thought it would be nice to create a collection of resources for those looking to learn more about the LGBTQ+ community and those within it that could use some support.

Mind (a helpful article about LGBTQ+ and mental health within the community) -  https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/tips-for-everyday-living/lgbtqiaplus-mental-health/

The Trevor Project (LGBTQ+ articles and resources) - https://www.thetrevorproject.org/resources/

GLAAD (another collection of articles and resources) - https://glaad.org/resourcelist/

Bisexual Resource Centre (a website featuring articles and resources for Bisexual people) - https://biresource.org/

The Proud Trust (resources for LGBTQ+ teens and young adults) - https://www.theproudtrust.org/

Switchboard (UK LGBTQ+ hotline) - https://switchboard.lgbt/

This list isn't exhaustive, but it's my favourite websites and resources that I've used in the past when I was questioning. Although some are UK based, some of the resources can apply wherever you are.

That's it for this week. I hope that this list is helpful to those who are looking to expand their knowledge or need help with their sexuality. See you next week.

The Frozen Eye Cover Design

Hi all,

It’s time for another cover reveal! Curse of Anubis #3: The Frozen Eye has now had its cover designed, once again by the amazing Deranged Doctor Design!

  • Tahira and Bastet are on the cover, though now they are joined by a horde of mummies!

  • The cat stock image on this one is my favourite so far. Having the cat looking up is so cute!

  • This cover is the opposite of the previous one, as Ra’s Eye is now with Bastet and her friends. Now they are after Horus’ Eye, which holds the power of ice and the moon,

  • In this book the characters travel to a new city, one that is even more infested with the dead than they’ve seen before.

  • The blue on this cover is gorgeous and makes the area look like an undead wasteland, which is exactly the vibe I wanted.

  • I love how the series branding has changed its colour to fit with the cover too.

The Frozen Eye will be available in ebook, paperback and hardcover in October 2025.

That’s it for this week, see you next week!

When I Realised I Was Bisexual

Hi all,

As it's Pride Month, I thought I'd share the story of how I realised I was bisexual. I came out a few years ago but I never shared the story of how I realised I wasn't straight.

During secondary school, I did have a crush on a girl in one of my classes. I think I was in year nine or ten, which would have made me about fifteen or sixteen. At the time, I thought it was normal. The other girls would go on about their 'girl crushes' so I assumed that it was normal to like girls in that way. Before that I thought that girls were really pretty but again, thought that was normal too.

As I got older I found more women attractive but didn't really see a correlation with it until I was eighteen. I discovered the word bisexuality during Pride Month and figured that the label would fit me, but I wasn't sure. I still didn't know if I was experiencing what everyone else experienced or if it was something else.

When I was nineteen I broached the subject with one of my friends at the time. She laughed me off and claimed that I couldn't be bisexual as I hadn't dated a woman. She told me that I was seeking attention and looking for something that would make me stand out from other people. That annoyed me at the time, but I couldn't fully articulate why so she just made fun of me further. She also liked to make fun of my body, anxiety, depression and boyfriend at the time.

A few weeks later she messaged me that she had a dream about having sex with a woman, so she must be bisexual. At that point I lost it and cut her off, as I knew deep down that she was just trying to agitate me. Well, it worked but I'd had enough of her antics at that point. I haven't spoken to her since. I didn't want to hear her constant put downs, especially about my sexuality, which I still wasn't sure about.

Since then, I've come to terms with my sexuality and came out. I still find it to be so empowering when I write my sexuality on forms, it makes me feel like my feelings have been validated.

If you are questioning your identity, don't listen to those who put you down. Give yourself time to figure things out and don't feel pressured to come out. You do what you want on your own time. It took me a few years, but I'm now comfortable with who I am and who I'm attracted to. I'm still me, no matter what.

If you are wondering if you’re bisexual or you’re not entirely sure what it is, do some research and see what it means to you. I’ve had a look at this website which specificlly focuses on bisexuality for those who want to learn more.

That's it for this week! I've got another blog post planned for Pride Month, about things I've heard as a bisexual woman. See you next Sunday.

July 2025 Project Announcement

Hi all,

With July coming up next month, it's time to announce my next writing project! This one, currently unnamed, has been sat in my ideas folder for years, just waiting to be written.

It will be a YA Fantasy Horror, featuring goddesses and a world filled with magic.

The main character is Imara, one of only five people who have been blessed by the goddess of Death. She has the power to bring the dead back to life and decompose anything she touches.

Due to the rarity of this power, not much is understood about it. The other goddesses send out their blessed to capture Imara and force the goddess of Death to show herself once more to the world.

The other goddesses have the power of Life, Sky, Animals and Metal. But the goddess of Death is the most powerful and elusive of the five.

Imara has to work out a way to keep herself, and her sisters, safe from the blessed that want to take her away. They want her to use her power for evil and that's something she's promised herself she would never do.

I'm once again setting a goal of fifty thousand words by the end of July. This gives me plenty of time and hopefully I can get the first draft written in that time!

I've been looking forward to writing this one for a while. It's just been sat in my ideas folder for so long that I now think it's finally it's chance to be written. I hope to bring Imara to life as much as possible and tell the story of a world where magic can't always be trusted.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading! See you next week.

Tips on How to Get Out of a Reading Slump

Hi all,

I know we've all been there, where we just can't bring ourselves to read a book. Where it starts to feel like a chore rather than an escape. This week, I thought I'd give you some tips on how to hopefully break out of your reading slump!

Re-read old books

If you have a comfort book, give it a read again! It doesn't matter how many times you read a book, as long as you enjoy doing it. Re-reading an old favourite might reignite your passion once more.

Read audiobooks

This can make reading easier as you just have to listen. You can read while doing chores, going out or even just laying in bed. Instead of having to focus on the page, you can just let your mind drift off.

Read graphic novels

Graphic novels are easy to read and have plenty of visuals for when your mind doesn't feel like imagining the book's events. Some of them can be quite short as well, so you don't have to spend hours reading it if you don't want to.

Read a short book

Instead of picking up a full-length novel, try a novel or a smaller book. You'll find yourself enjoying reading again without devoting too much time to one story.

Read fanfiction

If there's a book you absolutely love and that's what you want to read more of, try fanfiction. There are thousands of stories out there written by fans to suit anyone who loves a book.

Read short stories

Short stories won't take too long to read, so it won't take too much of a toll on your mind. After reading a few, you might find yourself building up to bigger books again.

Read a book by your favourite author

If you've previously loved a book by your favourite author, why not try one of their other books? You might be pleasantly surprised to find a new favourite!

Read in short bursts

Instead of pushing yourself to read a few chapters or for an hour, read in short bursts instead. Maybe ten pages and then take a break, or just a chapter. Your mind will dwell on the book's events more and you might find yourself going back to read more.

Read a new genre

If you're not interested in any of the books that are out in your favourite genre, why not try a new one? Several genres have a lot of crossover that can make it easy to read a new one. Like horror? Try mystery or paranormal books. Like fantasy? Try LitRPG books.

That's it for this week! I've had reading slumps before and they can be tough to get out of if you're not motivated to read. But I hope this post helps anyone who might be struggling. See you next week.

How to Choose a Colour Scheme for Your Book

Hi all,

This week I'm going to give you some tips on how to pick a colour scheme for your book. A colour scheme for a cover is crucial, as it then matches your advertising and can be associated with your author brand.

Genres.

A lot of genres have popular colours and less popular colours. Have a look through books of your genre and note down any colours that pop up often. For example, romance books are often associated with red, pink or baby blue tones.

Series.

If your book is part of a series, try to find colours that will match across several books. You don't want the colours to be too different so they look like they're from a different series, but not too similar that it could be confused with a different book in the series.

Setting.

Is your book set in a certain season? Or a certain place? Try to match the colours with the setting. If you're writing a horror book, there's no point in using a colour scheme centred on bright pink. If your book is dystopian, try to think of the colour of the sky. Is it normal? Burning? Hidden by clouds?

Magic.

If your book contains magic of any kind, it's more than likely going to end up on your cover. This could become the main focus of the cover, so you want to make sure it stands out but doesn't look too out of place with other covers in your genre.

Discuss with your cover designer.

Your cover designer will be able to help if you’re struggling to come up with a colour scheme for the cover. Either ask them for options or let them choose. Either way, communicating with your cover designer is key to getting a beautiful cover.

That's it for this week! I hope this has helped someone with picking a colour scheme. See you next week.

My Favourite Non-Writing Podcasts

Hi all,

Today I'm going to talk about a few podcasts I listen to that aren't writing related. My boyfriend and I usually listen to them before we go to sleep which I found has gotten me settled a lot more quickly.

Hat Films.

Hat Films are three YouTubers who I've been watching for years. They are absolutely hilarious and I managed to get my fiancé into them as well. They usually talk about random news or scenarios that their Patrons can vote on. Their videos are great and their podcast is just as good. I love listening to them rant about various topics or try to come up with ways out of certain scenarios. Whenever a new video comes out, that's the first thing my fiancé and I watch. They are great entertainment and I would highly recommend checking them out.

SCP Archive.

This is a podcast that I've been listening to for a few months and I really enjoy it. I've known about the SCP Foundation for years and I've read into a lot of them. My favourites are the dangerous ones that could end the world in a few seconds if they were released. Hearing the stories being read out with various voice actors is great. The only thing that I wished they would do explain the SCPs a bit more. They just read out what's on the pages and some of them can be confusing.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

I've only just started listening to this one but I love it so far! The TV series is one of my favourite shows and I knew I'd love the podcast too. They talk about various episodes and so far I've listened to them talk about their parking a lot!

The Office Ladies.

This series is a favourite of mine that I love to rewatch. So to have a podcast is a great bonus! I love hearing all of the behind the scenes stuff and deleted scenes. Angela and Jenna are fantastic hosts and they are so entertaining to listen to.

That's it for this week, I hope you enjoyed reading and will check out some of these podcasts! See you next week.
